William Berger Introduces Our Across the Magic Fire Guest -- Christian Van Horn

Christian Van Horn

Bass-Baritone Christian Van Horn is one of the most exciting stars in the opera world today. The Long Island native is known not only for his portrayals of evil (e.g., Claggart in Billy Budd, the Doctor in Wozzeck, the Four Villains in The Tales of Hoffmann, and, in an especially dastardly success, the Devil Himself in Mefistofele) but also even very, very good characters (e.g., Timur in Turandot and the angel Alidoro in La cenerentola [“Cinderella”]). He has starred on the world’s great stages from San Francisco to Salzburg and beyond. His roles range from the baroque to world premieres of new (and often challenging) works (e.g. Tan Dun’s Tea: A Mirror of the Soul for Santa Fe and Thomas Adès’ superbly twisted The Exterminating Angel for the Metropolitan Opera of New York). The Yale graduate is the recipient of the highly prestigious Richard Tucker Award in 2018. During Lockdown, he has shared his booming voice and heavy reflections in The CVH Podcast.
